Tuition refunds and rules for international students

If you need to withdraw from UFV or drop courses, read these important notes first:

  • All refund requests must be made through the refund request form
  • Refund processing takes about 4 weeks, and decisions are final
  • Refunds are processed at the current exchange rate
  • Dropping courses might affect your study permit eligibility

Refund deadlines

  • Full refunds for New Students must be requested before the start of classes
  • Partial refunds for New Students must be requested before the end of the second week of classes. 
  • Current Students are subject to the withdrawal dates and deadlines set by the Office of the Registrar.

NEW STUDENTS

Full Withdrawal

If you withdraw completely for the semester you have paid for and meet the transfer or refund criteria below, you may be eligible for a:

  • Fee Transfer: To transfer fees to the next semester, complete the Deferred Admission form by the deadline. Some programs do not qualify for deferrals. The Admissions office processes your request.

  • Full Refund: You are eligible for a full refund if you have either (1) a visa refusal letter from the Canadian Embassy or Consulate or (2) medical documentation stating you are unable to study. Full refunds must be requested (through the refund request form) before the start of classes.

  • Partial Refund:
    • 50% refund: If you withdraw to attend another public post-secondary institution before classes start (you must provide an acceptance letter from the other institution).
    • 25% refund: If you withdraw for other reasons up until before the second week of classes.
    • No refund: after the second week of classes.

The $5000 minimum deposit amount is not eligible for partial refunds. Students who decide not to attend UFV after paying the the minimum deposit will only be eligible for a refund if they meet the Full Refund criteria.

Application and administration fees are non-refundable.

Partial Withdrawal

As a new full-time international student at UFV, you pay a flat rate for 12 credits per fall or winter semester. If you drop one or more credits, you are not eligible for a refund unless both of the following apply to you:

  • You are registered for more than 12 credits and want to withdraw from the excess credits.
  • You withdraw within the deadlines outlined by the Office of the Registrar.

CURRENT STUDENTS

Full Withdrawal

If you withdraw completely for the semester you have paid for, you might be eligible for a refund. The Office of the Registrar sets withdrawal penalty deadlines for current students. Please visit the Withdrawal Dates and Refund Schedule section for more.

Partial Withdrawal

  • Fall/Winter: No financial penalty if you drop credits unless you exceed 12 credits or meet specific criteria (e.g., medical reasons, co-op) and drop before the deadlines.
  • Summer: You can take fewer credits and pay per credit. You may get a refund if you drop courses before the deadlines.

How to request a refund

  1. Download and complete the international student refund form
  2. If you want your refund to be sent to a Canadian bank account, you must attach a void cheque from your account or a printout of your account information to the form. You can also choose to have your refund sent to a bank outside of Canada (no void cheque required).
  3. Fill out the form below, being sure to include the required attachments.

UFV International Student Tuition Refund FAQs

All refund requests must be submitted online.  Refunds take approximately 4 weeks to process from the date all documentation has been received.

Maybe.  If you paid from outside Canada and your refund is also sent to a non-Canadian bank, the exchange rate may differ between payment and refund dates. Refunds are issued at the prevailing rate on the processing day, so the amount refunded may differ from the original payment.

Maybe!  We recommend consulting with us before making changes to your course load to ensure you are complying with the conditions of your study permit. Contact studypermits@ufv.ca before making changes to your course load.

  • You are eligible for a full refund (minus the $150 admin fee) if you:
  • Have a visa refusal letter from the Canadian Embassy/Consulate, or
  • Provide medical documentation proving you are unable to travel/study, and
  • Make the request in writing before the start of classes.

  • The following partial refunds are available depending on the reason and time of request:
    • 50% Refund: If you are withdrawing to attend another public post-secondary institution (requires acceptance letter), before classes start.
    • 25% Refund: If you are withdrawing for other reasons before the end of the second week of classes.
    • No Refund: After the second week of classes.

Refunds for current students follow the withdrawal deadlines as established by the Office of the Registrar. However, please note partial withdrawals in fall and/or winter will only result in a refund if:

  • You are registering for more than 12 credits, or
  • You are a per-credit student.

If you miss the refund request deadline, you will not be eligible for a refund. It's important to submit your request before the applicable deadlines.

Yes, if you are a new student and wish to transfer your fees to the next semester, you can complete the Deferred Admission form by the deadline. However, please note that not all programs allow deferrals.

If your refund is going to a bank outside Canada, you will receive email from Convera with instructions on how to log into their portal and provide your bank information.

If your refund is going to a Canadian bank, it will be deposited directly into your bank account. to complete the refund process (please be sure to check your inbox and junk folder).  However, if your refund is going to a third party, it will be issued to them as a cheque and mailed.

A visa delay does not qualify for a refund. Only a visa refusal letter from the Canadian Embassy or Consulate makes you eligible for a full refund.
